Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation is a non-pharmaceutical way to relieve discomfort in labor using electrical stimulation to increase the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain-relieving substances, and block the nerve pathways that cause discomfort. Although not commonly used in the United States, TENS is regularly used in labor in Canada, the United Kingdom and many other countries.
Sunday Tortelli has received specialized training in the use of TENS in labor and rents safe and effective obstetric TENS units along with a complementary instructional session during the last trimester of pregnancy.
